Brief History
Anguilla’s earliest known inhabitants were the Indigenous Taino Amerindians whose fishing and boat building practices are still continued throughout the island today. European contact began in the late 1400s, and the island was settled by the English in 1650. Over the centuries, Anguilla maintained a strong desire for self-governance, leading to its separation from Saint Kitts in 1967 and its recognition as a separate British Overseas Territory. Today, Anguilla is celebrated for its stability, welcoming culture, and growing reputation as a luxury travel destination.
